Nationals in a Nutshell

Dear Colleagues

Nationals in a Nutshell: Launch of a new online resource for parents/carers

The National Parent Forum of Scotland is launching ‘Nationals in a Nutshell’, a series of subject-based summaries of the new National qualifications for parents/carers. The first batch of Nutshells is available online today on the National Parent Forum website (click the ‘Nationals in a Nutshell’ tab)
or use the link
The Nationals in a Nutshell will be added to over the coming weeks by additional subjects and will be launched at three regional events for parents/carers with a “Qualifications Plus” theme on: -

· 5 March (East of Scotland – Edinburgh)
· 13 March (West of Scotland: Glasgow)
· 20 March (North of Scotland: Aberdeen).

Iain Ellis, Chair of the National Parent Forum of Scotland, said:

“We recently held focus groups with parents and they asked for more information about the new qualifications in advance of August 2014, when current S3s will be the first cohort to experience them. In response, we have organised a three regional Qualifications Plus events for parents/carers, with keynote speakers and a panel of experts, plus time for discussion.

We have also put together the first in a series of ‘Nationals in a Nutshell’. These set out how the Curriculum for Excellence journey translates into courses for qualifications.

Subject content will always be subject content – what is crucial is how it is delivered to young people to ensure that it is relevant to 21st century life and that it engages them and helps them to learn”.

Volunteers required for PTA Picnic

Dear Parents, Carers, Guardians and friends of Mile End School

Our annual school picinic will take place on Thursday 30 May and the PTA is seeking your help to ensure this will be a fantastic event for our school family and wider community around Mile End.

This year’s theme is the Highland Games and we are already thinking of some fantastic activities, games and of course refreshments all with a Highland Games theme.

As we head for the Easter break, we are getting our volunteer recruitment under way. If you have skills, talents, hobbies, business interests, powers of persuasion, donations, baking skills, raffle prizes, and even a little bit of spare time – please let us know.

We will be seeking to recruit willing parents to help set up on the day, assist with the event, and help tidy up afterwards. Please let us know if you can contribute even half an hour of your time.

You can contact the PTA via our email

We look forward to hearing from you.

Secondhand Uniform Sale

The next secondhand uniform sale will take place by the dining hall on Thursday 28 March, 3.00-3.30pm.
We are happy to accept donations of good quality uniforms, but Mile End logo items only please. Please leave donations in a bag, clearly marked, in the Parents’ Room.

Lost Property!

Currently in Lost Property we have the following unnamed items:
18 jackets, 40 jumpers/cardigans, 6 pairs of trousers, umpteen shoes/gym shoes/trainers, dozens of hats/scarves/gloves, several lunchboxes/water bottles, an array of t-shirts/shorts/underwear and a wide selection of umbrellas/jewellery/hairbands/glasses/toys.
As we do not have the space to store this amount any items which have not been claimed by the end of term will be recycled.

Save the Date! PTA Picnic 30 May

Mile End PTA is delighted to announce this years annual School Picnic will take place between 6 and 8pm on Thursday 30 May.
This years theme is the Highland Games so dust down your kilt and start getting fit for some caber tossing and welly throwing.
We are really looking forward to running a fun filled event with many Highland themes, activities, foodie delights and refreshments!
As ever we need your support to run this event so please consider what you are able to contribute, no matter how small. We will need help with setting up, running stalls and activities, and tidying up.
We will also be seeking out your support for raffle prizes, home baking and other skills and talents. Please give generously.
A message containing contact details for volunteers will be circulated in the next few days.
Thanks and regards,

After School Language Club

Calling all parents!

Do you speak German? Would you be interested in giving an hour of your time once a week to start a German conversation group for P6/P7 pupils?

Looking for a German speaking parent, with disclosure, who would be willing to set to set up and run the club, on a voluntary basis, one afternoon per week at school. For a period of one hour – any day possible.

PTA meeting 6 March 2013

Dear Parents,
Further to our earlier email cascade regarding PTA fund irregularities, we can confirm that this is now a police investigation and not a topic that can be discussed by members of the MEPC.
However, we are delighted and encouraged by the response from parents to be part of the PTA and we welcome your support.  The plan is to move ahead and get a strong team working on the PTA to deliver the fabulous fund raising events that the children, teachers and parents enjoy taking part in.
Please come along to the next PTA meeting on Wednesday the 6th March and find out how you can become involved.  The annual school picnic will be here before we know it and we need your help to make it and other events a success.

See you on the 6th March. The Agenda for the meeting is attached.
